The Salsa Cure
Salsa Dancing & Seritonin

By Phil Seyer

Salsa dancing is fast. It's the perfect cure for Roseville or Sacramento coach potatoe syndrome: sitting around and becoming slow and fat. It's also a possible cure for panic disorder and other anxiety disorders. Salsa rhythm is typically Quick, Quick Slow. Thank God for the slow, because it does give the Roseville chums a chance to pause momentarily. For information about a fun mid-week salsa dance lesson in Sacramento and party, click here.

Cuban Hip Motion. Actually we don't entirely pause on the slow. An experienced salsa dancer will use Cuban hip motion. So on the slow the bent leg will straighten. As the leg straightens the hip above that leg will be displaced slightly to the side, giving the dancer a sexy look. This is not just for the ladies like some think. Men also look good with Cuban hip motion as long as it is not overdone. You can see this by watching the salsa videos mentioned later in this article. .

Seritonin and Salsa. But I digress. Cuban hip motion is really the subject of another article. The main focus here is on how salsa dancing is good for you physically and emotionally. Vigorous exercise like salsa dancing can increase the amount of serotonin in the brain; serotonin is a chemical that can help to releave anxiety. Larina Kase, a doctor of psychiatry says: "There is evidence that panic disorder, like most anxiety disorders, is exacerbated by serotonin imbalances, which exercise can help control."

Besides kicking up the level of serotonin, salsa dancing boosts the levels of dopamine and endorphins in your system. Dopamine and endorphins are chemicals that trigger pleasurable feelings that can last for hours after your salsa dance session is complete.

Salsa dancing may even help people with chronic fatigue syndrome (CSF). A study of 150 people with CSF showed that exercise improved their physical functioning with improvements noted in fatigue, sleep, disability and mood. Salsa is great exercise.

Of course, there are other benefits to dancing salsa: pure fun, learning something new, meeting new people and moving together as one with a partner, if only for 3 minutes.
