The musical phrase usually starts with quick-quick, so it is nice to begin the dance with a rock step. However, that's not absolutely necessary. Many instructors teach students to start with a slow step to the side. This can work because beginners find it much easier to start with a slow step to the side rather than a rock step. Also, some music (especially country nighclub two step) tends to start the musical phrase with a slow rather than quick-quick. Musical PhrasingHow can you tell where the musical phrase starts? Listen for a pause in the vocal line or a melody line played by an instrument that seems to dominate the music. Listen for the first accented note when the action starts again. If the phrase starts with a slow note (usually a quarter note), then it would be best to start dancing with a slow step to the side. Rhythmic Variety in Nightclub Two StepAlthough the rhythm in nightclub two step is usually either...
... it doesn't always have to be that! After all, this is a nightclub dance and there is room for creativity and flexibility! Just as Fox trot isn't always slow slow quick quick, so different rhythms can be used in NC2S. One of my favorite rhythms is: Of the first slow the leader connects with his partner (right leg to right leg). The leader then paddles around with his left foot, keeping his right foot in place and keeping contact with the follower's right foot. The follower does the same. After 6 slows, the leader may rock back as in the regular NC2S basic step. This is a very sexy step with a nice connection between leader and follower. For
