Salsa The Sacramento Salsa lesson and party this Wednesday was really fun. What? You missed it? No problem. The lesson happens every Wednesday and the cost is only $5.00. Drinks are 1/2 price. There were about 25 students in attendance, a good number for a salsa lesson and party. We first went over the basic step and then moved on to the ladies right turn. That's a step where the guy lifts his arm and the lady makes a turn to the right and comes back to her man. (as she always should) No partner was needed during the salsa lesson. We changed partners during the lesson. Research shows that you learn to dance salsa faster if you change partners during the lesson. Some couples that wanted to stay together didn't change partners and that was also acceptable. After the basic salsa step and ladies right turn, we learned a hammer-lock/ladies hairbrush combination. To do the salsa dance hammer lock, on count 3, the leader changes to a right-to-right hand position and leads a right turn. Once the follower comes around to face him, the leader offers his left hand to the follower reaching underneath his right hand. This results in a left over right hand position for the leader. Keeping his left hand low, the leader then leads another right turn by raising his right hand high and to the left. As the follower turns, her left hand goes behind her back into a position the resembles a hammer lock. At the point, the leader lifts his hand slightly over the followers head as if to come her hear. He moves his right hand while holding her left hand. He moves it directly toward her (not to the left and not to the right). The follower should recognize this as a lead for a hairbrush and she should immediately brush her hair in her own inimitable style. The leader should then release the follower's left hand and slide his hand down the back of her neck and on to her left shoulder. All this happens on the quick-quick slow as the follower does a rock step back (count: 1 2 3 -) Next the leader releases his hammerlock hold and nudges the follower with his right hand and she does her right turn When the follower comes around to face the leader, the pattern is complete and the leader may lead the basic step or another pattern. This sounds very complicated, perhaps more so than it is. It was very easy to learn and most couples, even beinners learned it. Discover the truth for your yourself.
