Sure go with a friend if you like, but avoid hanging out together with your friend all night. Split up for a while. Have a clear agreement before hand about splitting up and then checking back with each other at a certain time. If you come with a friend, always leave with him or her unless you renegotiate this agreement at the party. Should I find a table and stay seated? No, explore the place. Don't just find a table and sit there all night. Walk around casually and check out the place and people. Mr or Ms Right could be sitting over in that dark corner. If you sit for a while is fine, but don't be glued to your chair. Should I ask for a phone number? If you really like someone and the feeling seems mutual, it may make sense to get a phone number or other contact information. Remember, this could be your last chance to make a connection with this person. You don't want to have to place an ad in the paper in the "missed connections" section. Have some guts. Take courage. A nice way to do this is to simply ask, "May I give you a call sometime?" Another option is to exchange business or name cards. In some cases, you may want to just offer your card without exchanging card. I don't recommend this howeverr. After all, if the other person doesn't like you enough to make a fair exchange of information, there probably isn't much hope of anything developing between you. If you do get a phone number, be sure to follow up with a call. If you really like this person, call the next day -- not to make a future date, but just to say hello and to let your new friend know how much you enjoyed meeting him or her. How Can I Move On? Sometimes you may get involved in a conservation with someone, but you want to network and meet more people. If you are shy it may be tough to break away from this person. A simple way to do this is to say, "It's been nice talking to you. Excuse me, I'm going to network some more. Have a good evening!" If it feels right, you may want to add "let's talk again later," or "let's dance again later." You could use an excuse like, "Excuse me I need to go to the bathroom." or "I think I'll get a drink."
